I have talked to people who have bought houses from these do-it-yourselfers who have take the liberty to smear mortar over bricks, caulked holes that should have been filled with mortar or thought they could fill up a spalling brick with mortar.
If you don't know what tools and material to use and are in a hurry, please call someone who knows what to do.
Your smearing and incorrect materials cause a property devaluing eyesore to parts of your house that are visible to many people.
When someone has done a poor repair or put caulking where it's not supposed to be; when someone has to repair this area, it becomes more expensive because now, not only does the repair need to be redone, the old stuff will need to be taken away. This is usually very difficult when a brick is smeared or a mortar joint is filled with caulking.
Please take the time to learn the proper techniques, tools and materials or leave it up to the professionals.
